The Hospital
School is one of the schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district and is located
within the UNC Hospitals complex. Founded in 1965, the school has grown from a staff of 2
serving approximately 50 patients to a staff of 16 serving over 2000 annually. The number of
residents at our school fluctuates over time. The school provides year-round educational services
to school-age children and adolescents while they are patients so they will be able to continue
their studies with as little interruption as possible. In a medical setting, school activities can also
provide a normalcy and offer distraction from pain or anxiety. Our facility offers classrooms and
other physical spaces for group lessons, and when needed, programs are facilitated at bedside or
on the patients' units where they are being treated.
Kidzu Children's Museum was able to continue to utilize a mobile method that we were able to
efficiently implement last year with our students in the hospital; doing this allowed us to bring the
material to our students at their bedside. The ability to transport material to a student's hospital
room and complete a mosaic tile there was an enriching activity that our students have really
enjoyed. We were also able to bring the material to patients in the Neurosciences Hospital to
participate in this program as well. The mobility of the method that Kidzu created allowed us to
branch out and reach a new population of students. The ability for Kidzu Children's Museum to
think outside of the box and find ways to bring new materials to the Hospital School students is
amazing.
We are thrilled that our relationship with Kidzu Children's Museum was able to continue this
year, and look forward to working with them again.
Most sincerely,
Michaella Levandoski
LJNC; Hospicals School is a member of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District
