TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL
Public&Cultural Arts
200 Plant Road
Chapel H,ll,NC 27514
phone(919) 968-2750 fax(919)932-2923
www.townofchapeUlM.org
May 17, 2013
Orange County Arts Commission
501 West Franklin St.
Chapel Hill, NC 27516
Dear Commissioners:
I am again exerting my support for the Kidzu Children's Museum's spring 2013 Project Grant.
Their"Building Community through Mosaic Program worked with youth at the Hargraves
Center and various Town and community-based festivals to develop mosaics that will be
incorporated into the new Kidzu Museum building when it is constructed. Such instruction to
over 900 children also helped build self-esteem and gave young children a safe place to gather
and interact afterschool and on weekends. The project offered, these sometimes at-risk youth,
opportunities that they might not otherwise have.
Their request this year builds on those successes to pilot an artist in residence program at Kidzu
in a similar manner. With Kidzu moving to a much larger location at University Mall, the
proposed free Sunday program will certainly be popular and serve a very broad audience.
Jeannette Brossart, the artist that conducted the workshops over the last couple of seasons is
again being employed to facilitate the workshops. I have the utmost respect for Ms. Brossart as
an instructor and an artist. I have worked with her on a number of successful projects in the area
and found her to engage the students, act professionally, and give far more to the project than she
is being paid to give. In addition to Brossart, the proposal calls for a group of artists and others
to be involved in the planning and implementation of the artist-in residence program. Kidzu has
a reputation of delivering high quality education programs for our community. No doubt this
project will again achieve the goals set forth in their proposal.
The Town remains excited of the prospects of Kidzu expanding and eventually moving back to
the center of downtown Chapel Hill. My hope is your will review this project in the same
favorable manner you have reviewed past collaborations between Kidzu. Please contact me if I
can provide any additional information about the Town's partnership with Kidzu on this project.
Sincerely,
ffre ,
Public Arts Administrator
