entirely new building. The Thrift Shop has been unable to provide district PTAs with the
sustaining funds that have been received in the past. As a result, grant funds are greatly
needed and appreciated in order to provide our students with cultural opportunities that
they otherwise might not experience.
The Estes Hills PTA Cultural Enrichment Committee plans to use the grant to help fund
two performances during the fall of the 2013-2014 school year. Performances will take
place in the school gymnasium during the regular school day, to best utilize the students'
time and the committee's budget. For space considerations and developmental reasons,
we divide the audience into two age groups consisting of the younger students
(kindergarten through 2nd grade) and the older students (3`d grade through 5th grade).
The 2013-2014 fall performances will be:
Project Trio — On October 8th, 2013, Project Trio will perform two 50-minute shows, one
for our K-2"d grades and one for our 3`d-5th grades. Project Trio is a passionate, high-
energy chamber music ensemble comprised of three virtuosic composer/performers
from Brooklyn, New York. Blending their classical training with an eclectic taste in
musical styles, Project Trio has made an impact on audiences of all ages. Project Trio is
a musical experience that defines a new level of entertainment.
Project Trio has performed for over 100,000 students on three continents, including over
35 states in the U.S. By presenting instrumental music fused with hip-hop, rock, and
pop, Project Trio truly bridges the gap between classical music and pop culture. Project
Trio in-school concerts are tailored for the particular grades in the audience. Their
concerts are high-octane chamber music experiences that are both aurally and visually
stimulating. Project Trio takes the students on a journey through multiple genres and
styles of music, including classical, jazz, rock, salsa, hip-hop, and their own original
music. The concert features famous composers like Tchaikovsky, Mingus, Prokofiev,
Brubeck, and Beethoven. Project Trio's concerts often involve full audience participation
and a beatbox tutorial that will have every student (and teacher) beatboxing for the rest
of the year!
Felix Pitre— On November 7th, 2013, Felix Pitre will present two performances of his
work, "Stories & Songs of Latin America," one show for our K-2nd grades and one show
for our 3rd-5th grades. Mr. Pitre was born in Cataho, Puerto Rico, and moved to the
United States at the age of two. He was raised in New York City and attended The New
York City High School for the Performing Arts. Mr. Pitre has been performing his
bilingual shows to the delight of audiences since the mid-1970s.
In his interactive program, Mr. Pitre shares many of the Hispanic traditions that were
passed down to him from his own family, bringing to life the culture of Latin America with
puppetry, stories, songs, instruments, and dance. Performed mostly in English in his
own bilingual style, Mr. Pitre takes the audience on a journey filled with laughter and
learning. They may hear the story of Puerto Rico's folk hero, Juan Bob, or find the
Jibaro's lessons in an alternate story, Paco and the Witch. After learning the origins of
La Bamba, they join in singing the chorus and later perform a tri-lingual song (Spanish,
English, and sign language) called Pollito-Chicken. And then there is Cocqui, the lovable
frog puppet who steals the show (and sometimes a kiss) while helping the audience
understand and appreciate people who speak with different accents. In the finale,
audience members play Latin American percussion instruments as everyone joins in the
Cuban favorite, Guantanamera.
