Carrboro Elementary School Arts in Education Application 5/21/13 '
Please find attached information Felix Pitre's shows and a photo of the performer. At the time of
writing this grant, there was no audio or video available. A YouTube video is available of Felix Pitre
performing"Stories& Songs of Latin America": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHCmRwT7tAc.
The other group we would like to bring to our school is the Soul Street Dance Company, a hip-
hop/break dancing group of young men who were formerly considered at risk, found focus through
dance, and are now working as professionals. Soul Street Dance Company will demonstrate varied
dance styles and their distinctive features and origins. We believe this high energy, participatory show
with dances and music from many cultures is a great fit for our school and will have a high impact on
our students. We plan to host two Soul Street Dance Company shows for$1,700.
After careful consideration, we have decided that Felix Pitre and Soul Street Dance Company closely
align with our curriculum objectives at Carrboro Elementary. Carrboro Elementary adheres to the
North Carolina Standard Course of Study for guidance in curriculum standards. An essential learning
outcome in the State arts curriculum is 1.C.1 Understand cultural, historical, and interdisciplinary
connections with dance. The objective of recognizing how dance is used in the customs and
traditions of various cultures will be fulfilled through the vibrant performance of the Soul Street
Dancers. In this show, male street dancers perform a contemporary mix of Street Dance from Brazil's
Capoeira to New York's break dance, using music ranging from Vivaldi to Michael Jackson.
Another standard is K.CRA Understand global, interdisciplinary, and 21St century connections
with music. Felix Pitre's interactive program uses music, storytelling, puppetry and instruments to
bring the culture of Latin America to life and further a better understanding of the people and their
customs. This show will work well to fulfill the objective of recognizing the relationships between
music and concepts from other areas of the world.
We are asking for$1,000 to help us host these two artists in our school's auditorium. We plan to host
two Felix Pitre shows in November 2013, following Hispanic Heritage month. In late February or
early March 2014 we will host Soul Street Dance Company for two shows.
The Carrboro Elementary PTA has raised funds to sponsor similar shows in the past. In the 2012/2013
school year we hosted Hobey Ford for his multi-media puppet show called Migration, Donna
Washington, a storyteller and multicultural folklorist, and Ballet Folklorio who performed authentic
regional dances of Mexico. Artists typically do two performances in our auditorium, one for Pre-K-2nd
grade with approximately 372 students attending and another for 3'd-5' grade with approximately 260
students attending. The demographics of the audience is described on page 1 of this application.
Carrboro Elementary is well equipped to host these exciting groups. Our school has a performance
stage that can easily accommodate the casts of each group. The administrative staff of our school fully
supports our efforts to bring these groups to our school. Our Parent Teacher Association is prepared to
host the events, and the art and music departments are prepared to help finalize details of the shows.
Once funding is secure, the PTA will disseminate information to school administrators and teachers
that describes the performances and includes study guides aligned with our curriculum goals.
Carrboro Elementary is very excited about the opportunity to apply for funding which would facilitate
bringing these exciting artists to our school. The lives of students and families would be greatly
enriched if we could host these events. The PTA is prepared to raise the matching funds if we were to
be awarded monies from the Orange County Arts Commission.
