Carrboro Elementary School's Arts Programs
Arts programming is an integral part of learning at Carrboro Elementary and we try to provide diverse
ways for students to be exposed to art, music, theater and dance. Our arts programs are also an
important way that students learn about other cultures. Students attend Art and Music classes for 45
minutes each week. In Music they study different types of music and the music of a variety of cultures.
In Art they use paint, drawing, clay, fibers and mixed medium and study and learn about artists,
cultures and types of art.
Carrboro Elementary's dance teacher teaches dance to students as a way of learning about other
cultures and increasing levels of physical activity. Dances this year have been from a wide range of
countries including several Spanish speaking countries, Africa, Ireland, and a traditional maypole
dance. Students attend dance twice a week for 30 minutes at a time.
In our extra-curricular theater program, students have created and produced full-length theatrical
productions for the past three years including"Suessical Jr.," "The Jungle Book" and"School House
Rock." This year, 116 students created and produced"School House Rock," after school, over a three-
month period. Please see attached photo of the "School House Rock"cast on stage. The school
community provided impressive support of close to $3,000 in donations and services. The school has
received support to put on a production of"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"in 2013/2014.
Carrboro Elementary also has art programming during the summer. In 2012,an "Art in Literature"
camp was run through the Ackland Art Museum and focused on art found in literature. Campers
learned to recognize artists, analyze art techniques, and create their own art. Campers also spent a day
at the Ackland Art Museum. In the 2013 camp series, we will run the"Art in Literature"camp again
as well as adding a Photography camp that teaches about art through abstract photography of the
school and community.
III. Proposed Use of Grant Funds
Performance artists who visit our school bring their unique perspectives on multicultural education
through music, dance and storytelling. We are requesting the assistance of the Orange County Arts
Commission in bringing two performance groups to Carrboro Elementary. We believe that the two
groups we have chosen will have an enormous impact on our students who are already prepared by the
global world view they have been exposed to and the variety of art experiences they have received at
our school.
Felix Pitre is a Latin American storyteller and musician. His"Stories& Songs of Latin America" show
will be a wonderful fit for our school with our large Latino community and our extensive study of the
Spanish language and Latin American culture. We plan to host Mr. Pitre for two shows for$1,500.
