Soul Street Dance is enjoyable, successful, original
University of Minnesota Morris
University Register— May 6, 2010
Angie Price
Variety Editor
May 1, 2010 the PAC Performing Arts was proud to present Soul Street Dance. The
concept of the show was to use classical music through the ages and pair it with strong,
energetic break dancing. The wonderful juxtaposition created a vibrant and original
show that had the marvelous ability to capture several audience generations.
The first notable attention grabber was the use of costumes. The coordination of the
costumes with the music made the performance that much more pleasing. There were
more variations from suit coats during the classical pieces, cardigans for the 1950's,
canes and tux shirts for the 1920's and 30's, and track jump suits jackets for the 1980's.
The correlation of costumes to music threw the visuals and made the very modern
break dancing appear fitting for the generation of music.
The dancing also complimented the music beautifully. The choreography of it either
slowed down or sped up with the pace and energy of the music. The movement of the
dancers was precise and flowing.
The lighting design that went with the music matched up perfectly. Elizabeth Karges
operated the light board and had the experience of running the lights as she saw
appropriate. Her"on the fly" operations gave the entire show variety and amplified the
energy on the stage.
The audience was a huge part of the show as well. The dancers fed off the energy the
audience put out, thus making the performance that much more lively.
After all the choreographed numbers were done the audience had the pleasure of
viewing the performers dance on the spot with no plan as to what they intended to do.
The improvisation of the dancers was spectacular to witness. The free style dancing
was full of energy, never choppy, and never looked unnatural. The dancers were very
comfortable in their movements and showed obvious knowledge of body motion.
All the components of the production beautifully collided into one energetic and exciting
performance that appealed to all ages. The production was very original in concept and
kept the audiences' attention from beginning to end.
