The festival will be a day-long event held in May 2014 in which teams
representing area high schools will share their art and stories, witness performances from
nationally renowned spoken word poets, and compete in the Word Rivalry inter-high school
poetry slam. Sacrificial Poets will use grant funds to 1)run at least 10 hours of outreach and
spoken word workshops in four area high schools(total of 40 hours between CHS, CHHS,
ECHHS,and Phoenix Academy)to help youth prepare for the festival, and 2)organize and run
the festival at a Chapel Hill-Carrboro community venue. The workshops will be conducted by
Sacrificial Poets' facilitators as well as guest artists and educators from the national spoken word
scene, and will help youth participants craft original works of spoken word poetry to be presented
at the final festival event. This culminating event will be open to the public, and will give youth
participants the opportunity to share their art with their peers and the greater community.
In addition, based on feedback we have collected from students, teachers, and community
members, we will be adding two new elements to our youth outreach this upcoming year. 1)We
will facilitate 3-5 additional poetry club events throughout the year.We want Word Rivalry to be
a reunion of poets, not just an introduction. Establishing connections during the year will allow
youth to build powerful bonds and fellowship across their county and regional high school poetic
community. These relationships will cultivate a stronger and more sustainable youth poetry
community. 2)We will create the first Word Rivalry Anthology. This culminating collection of
poetry will feature youth poets from across our community and will speak to the diversity,
beauty, and artistic prowess of our youth. All youth from local poetry clubs will be invited to
participate in the anthology. This collection of work will both showcase their art and create a
lasting treasure for students, parents, and community members to take home and keep.
