Sacrificial Poets: Organizational Profile
Sacrificial Poets is an award-winning spoken word poetry organization that serves middle, high
school, and college-aged youth in the Triangle Area of North Carolina. The organization
facilitates writing and performance workshops throughout the state and hosts regular youth poetry
events. In addition, Sacrificial Poets selects a team of six youth every year to take to the Brave
New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival(as seen on HBO). Sacrificial Poets utilizes
their own innovative arts education curriculum, known as YouTh ink. Workshops are based on a
culturally responsive pedagogy that celebrates learning differences, and is designed to benefit
participants in five specific ways: enhance emotional literacy, facilitate identity exploration,
refine writing and analytical skills, develop performance and public speaking competency, and
build self-confidence. Sacrificial Poets does not empower youth, rather we seek to create diverse,
welcoming, and transformative environments where youth can empower themselves. Sacrificial
Poets recently became a 501 (c)(3)non-profit organization in late 2012. In past years the
organization operated under the fiscal sponsorship of the St. Joseph's Historic Hayti Heritage
Foundation.
Sacrificial Poets: Examples of Current Programs and Services
In-School Programs
➢Workshops and Residencies: Sacrificial Poets teaching artists bring the YouTh ink.
Curriculum into the schools, teaching writing and performance workshops in high,
middle, and elementary school classrooms. This year, SacPoe has run in-school programs
across Chapel Hill-Carrboro,Durham,Alamance,Wake, and Chatham County school
districts. In addition, SacPoe also collaborated with Playmakers Repertory Company out
of UNC-Chapel Hill to provide a special workshop series to four local high schools. The
workshop curriculum was centered around the play A Raisin in the Sun, which the
students went to see on a field trip, and the program culminated with a final performance
at the Paul Green Theatre on UNC campus.
A Poetry Club Outreach: Sacrificial Poets helps to facilitate the creation and development
of poetry clubs at local high schools. These clubs are headed up by youth poets at the
school, and SacPoe Teaching Artists make regular visits to the clubs to teach workshops,
help boost recruitment, and inform club participants about upcoming events which they
may attend and share their art. These clubs also serve as the basis for slam teams that
compete in our Word Rivalry high school team slam.
After-School Programs
➢Poetic Justice: This 10-week workshop series is designed to target underserved and"at-
risk"high school youth in Durham,NC
);,,Durham Nativity School: Working in conjunction with the Mallarme Immersion Into the
Arts program, Sacrificial Poets teaching artists worked with middle school youth at the
Durham Nativity School for 6 weeks in the Fall.
➢Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate: Working in conjunction with the Blue Ribbon Mentor
Advocate program, Sacrificial Poets offered a series of after-school workshops to youth
mentees at Phillips, McDougle, Smith, and Culbreth Middle Schools throughout the Fall
of 2012.
