Creating in Clay: Launching a Ceramics Program
at Orange Charter School
Organizational Profile
Orange Charter School (OCS) was founded in 1997. As one of approximately 100
North Carolina Charter Schools, it is a registered non-profit corporation operating under
NC Charter School legislation. Like other public schools, the majority of its funding
comes from federal, state, and local educational allocations, however, unlike regular
public schools it receives no state or local funding for its facilities. Additional sources for
funding must be sought in order to provide an educational setting that meets those of
traditional public schools.
We are located at 920 Corporate Drive, in the Meadowlands Park in Hillsborough. The
schools operates under the leadership of principal Jarrod Dennis and is governed by a
Board of Directors consisting of six school parents, two teachers, and one community
member. The school serves students in grades kindergarten through 8t" grade with a
planned enrollment of 220 students for the 2012/13 academic year. Currently OCS has
once class per grade of 19 —23 students in grades kindergarten-5. Our Middle School
program accommodates two classes of 15-20 students in grades 6-8. The student body
is 54% male and 46% female. The racial composition of the student body is 84% white,
8% African-American, 4% Hispanic, 1% Asian, .05% Hawaiian Pacific and 3% of
students are of multi-racial origin. Exceptional children make up 23% of the student
population. OCS met all nine of its annual yearly progress (AYP) goals and was
designated an Honor School of Excellence in 2011/12.
Orange Charter School will nurture a community of academic and artistic
distinction, as it enriches each student's cultural literacy.
Orange Charter School, a public school of choice, offers young people in Kindergarten
through 8th grade a center for learning in which they develop a strong intellectual,
emotional, physical, and social foundation. Our program is characterized by a strong
commitment on the part of staff and parents to nurture a community of academic and
artistic distinction, as it enriches each student's cultural literacy.
OCS aligns the Core Knowledge® Curriculum to the North Carolina Standard Course of
Study (NCSCS) in order to prepare students for high school and citizenship in our
national and global community. Twice weekly Spanish (K-5 students), a class
differentiated music program, and physical education multiple times per week (all K-8
students) augment the NC Standards and Core Knowledge®content. Teachers
combine proven educational materials such as Everyday Math, Wilson Reading,
Letterland, and Accelerated Reader with a variety of teaching methods in order to tailor
the instruction to the needs of each class and individual students.
The small size of the OCS school body and classes as well as the low ratio of students
to teachers allows more individualized instruction and attention.
