was their favorite. Clay, clay, clay, making pots, more clay, more pots, more clay!
With this feedback I knew what our school needed, a kiln! It is with much excitement
that I was approved by the OCS Board of Directors to purchase a gently used kiln. 1 am
determined to give these students the clay experience they want and need to have to
continue their art education. For our ceramics program at Orange Charter School to
come to fruition I must have the proper wiring in the workroom, clay must be purchased
as well as glazes and clay tools. With the monies from the Orange County Arts
Commission grant I will be able to purchase these supplies locally and wholly give the
students at Orange Charter School the art experience they are longing for. Our school
is moving towards a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and
Mathematics) based curriculum. This will entail project learning among all students at
OCS, Kindergarten through 8th grade. I look forward to using ceramics as a tool to
integrate science and math with the arts. The chemical changes that take place on clay
with the addition of the glazes made of elements students find on the periodic table
under high temperatures will be an amazing process for my students to not only witness
but create.
On the following pages you will find a photograph of the Skutt kiln that has been
purchased by Orange Charter School, along with work samples of Orange Charter
students engaged in arts programming taught by Keri Frank over the past three years..
