She said the other resolution is to re-institute the Commission for Women as an <br /> advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners. She acknowledged help from women <br /> in the community, as well as Commissioner Gordon, on putting together this resolution. <br /> Chair Jacobs noted that the Education Task Force item is already on the agenda for <br /> September. <br /> Chair Jacobs noted that the Board discussed their energy and fuel consumption report <br /> and discussed doing a better job of tracking reusable items. He petitioned that Dave Stancil <br /> be involved, as this relates to the environmental responsibility goal. <br /> Chair Jacobs said many groups are working on the voter identification issue, and he <br /> hopes that when the board reconvenes on September 5th, staff will provide a report on these <br /> activities and on how the County can help people to register to vote. <br /> Chair Jacobs suggested that the lavender OWASA letter be added to the agenda to <br /> appoint two Board members. <br /> A motion was made by Commissioner Rich, seconded by Commissioner Price to add <br /> the request from OWASA for BOCC appointments to their Interagency Work Group to Develop <br /> Recommendations for Expanding Financial Assistance Program for OWASA Customers in <br /> Need. <br /> VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 4. Proclamations/ Resolutions/ Special Presentations <br /> a. Social Services Best Practices Award <br /> The Board acknowledged the job training partnership between Orange County Social <br /> Services (DSS) and Orange County Emergency Services for the Emergency Medical <br /> Technician Training and Employment Program for Work First Recipients, which resulted in <br /> Orange County receiving the Best Practices Award from the NC Association of County <br /> Directors of Social Services. <br /> Nancy Coston said the Social Services agency won an award; but in reality this was a <br /> partnership with Emergency Services. She said Social Services' workforce employment <br /> program worked with Emergency Services to identify and train individuals to seek employment. <br /> Kim Woodward, Emergency Services Supervisor, recognized two ladies she met <br /> through work first program, both with some medical experience. She said both women went to <br /> the Durham Tech EMT program and joined Orange County Emergency Services as permanent <br /> employees last year. She said both women are now signed up for the paramedic program, <br /> and she presented both employees to the Board for recognition. <br /> Chair Jacobs thanked the people who worked with Social Services on this, and he said <br /> this is an excellent example of government at work in a positive way. <br /> b.
