ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: September 5, 2013 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 11 -a <br />SUBJECT: Research Triangle Regional Partnership Board- Appointment(s) <br />DEPARTMENT: Board of Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING: (Y /N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): Under Separate Cover INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Membership Roster Clerk's Office, 245 -2130 <br />PURPOSE: To consider making appointment(s) to the Research Triangle Regional <br />Partnership Board (RTRP). <br />BACKGROUND: The RTRP organization has been a part of the State of North Carolina's <br />broad economic development marketing efforts for almost 20 years. Orange County is one of <br />the 13 counties historically associated with the Research Triangle Regional Partnership <br />(RTRP), which itself is one of 7 statewide regional agencies originally established by the N.C. <br />General Assembly. In the past, BOCC chose to serve on this board when the BOCC chose its <br />annual board /commissions but it has recently been brought to staff's attention that there are <br />currently two open Orange County BOCC member positions for the Research Triangle Regional <br />Partnership (RTRP), as follows: <br />(1) Position to complete the 1 remaining year of a 2 -year term (6/30/2012- 6/30/2014 — <br />currently vacant) <br />(2) Position to begin a new 2 -year term - 6/30/13 to 6/30/2015 (spot was recently filled by <br />Commissioner Price) <br />Commissioner Price has indicated that she would like to continue to serve and is interested in <br />the two year term that would expire June 30, 2015. <br />For the second board member position, Chair Jacobs has suggested, since the presidents of <br />the Raleigh and Durham Chambers of Commerce are board members for Wake County and <br />Durham County, and attend the RTRP's bi- annual meeting, we might want to invite a Chamber <br />president/member, and he said that the Hillsborough /Orange County Chamber of Commerce <br />Executive Director, Margaret Cannell, is very interested. <br />Mr. Brantley, as ED Director, currently sits in the 3rd board member spot, which is historically <br />without a specific term.
