8 <br /> i <br /> Triangle J Council of Governments <br /> 1997/98 Work Plan <br /> Goals to Improve the Economic Competitiveness of the Region <br /> Goal: Identify the key factors and pursue cooperative projects that will <br /> keep this Region economically competitive and promote actions on the part of <br /> local,state and federal governments that will strengthen the Region's economy. <br /> • Determine with the Division of Community Assistance the most useful role for <br /> TJCOG in the CDBG Program. • Assess viability,convene and staff the Regional <br /> Marketing Group. • Expand,update,publish and market the new "Triangle Map" <br /> to replace the Metro Map. • With the staff of the Greater Triangle Regional Council, <br /> prepare for World Class Region Confenence 1998. • Pursue a regional economic <br /> forecasting model which builds on economic analysis,current state,national and <br /> international economic trends,and the effects of new public policies and social trends <br /> upon businesses and promote regional transportation planning. • Pursue <br /> cooperative demographic forecasting. • Continue regional water quality <br /> management strategies to protect water supplies in both the Neuse and Cape Fear <br /> River basins. • Identify long-term development alternatives and assessment of the <br /> costs associated with various development patterns. • Conduct a long-term study of <br /> water supplies. • Promote the development and use of the Triangle J GIS and <br /> Regional Data Center. • Explore regional planning role in providing affordable <br /> housing. • Continue the regional biosolids composting effort. <br /> Goal: Further the Internationalization of the Region's Economy <br /> • Continue to serve on the International Committee of the Greater Raleigh Chamber <br /> of Commerce,work with IBM on the project to add international information kiosks <br /> at RDU. • Support the World Trade Center North Carolina as corporate secretary <br /> and executive board member. • Maintain world trade contacts via the North <br /> Carolina World Trade Association,re-elected state executive board secretary. <br /> • Serve on the NCWTA Triangle Chapter executive board as past-president. <br /> • Advisor for the NCWTA Annual Conference(keynote speaker is Retired General <br /> Colin Powell) to be held May 1998,in Charlotte. <br /> • Foreign Trade Zone#93 Grantee- fulfill contractual and administrative <br /> responsibilities for Zone#93 and existing or potential subzones;help market the <br /> general purpose zone and develop new subzones as needed. • Provide training to <br /> developers on Zones and make public/civic presentations. • Meet the contractual <br /> responsibilities as the FTZ grantee representative for the North Carolina Department <br /> of Commerce and for the Global TransPark Authority. • Pursue other FTZ <br /> administrative contracts and develop other subzones. <br />
