6 <br /> Additional Activities Related to Economic Development <br /> i <br /> Solid Waste Staff <br /> 1. Initiated,with a$162,000 grant from the U. S.Environmental Protection <br /> Agency, a two-year project to identify potential cost-saving partnerships between <br /> existing and potential industries for the reuse of materials,water and energy. <br /> 2. Produced ten case studies of commercial and institutions construction projects <br /> which used specifications (developed last year) to reduce construction waste <br /> without increasing project cost. <br /> 3. Produced a vidio on"deconstruction"entitled Old Buildings Don'st Have to Go to <br /> Waste. <br /> Land Use Planning,Data Center&GIS <br /> 1. Continued work on a cooperative demographic forecasting project for use in: <br /> Regional transportation planning; Regional water supply study;.Economic <br /> development partnerships;Regional development choices;and,Infrastructure, <br /> land use and environmental planning. <br /> 2. Reviewing Town of Benson's plans and development codes, addressing such <br /> issues as telecommunications tower siting,billboard policy,water and sewer <br /> extensions, and issues such as super store impact on main. <br /> 3. Working with Chatham County on a land use plan that has identified six <br /> policy issues including the development of"economic centers" in the county. <br /> 4. Served as regional data center,improved regional GIS. <br /> Water Resources Planning <br /> 1. Background work has been done on regional water study;bulk of project <br /> remains to be completed. Assisted in regional study of wastewater treatment <br /> options. <br /> 2. Continued to provide staff support and technical services to Upper Neuse <br /> River Basin Association. <br /> 3. Continued work on the creation of an Upper Cape Fear River Basin <br /> Association. <br /> 4. Continued to assist a number of local governments in their efforts to obtain <br /> water supply allocations from Jordan Lake. <br /> 5. Assembled information of privately owned and operated water and wastewater <br /> systems in the Triangle; and,actively participated in statewide task force to assure <br /> that public and private water systems remain economically,technically and <br /> environmentally viable over the long term. <br />
