.I <br /> 5 <br /> 1996/97 Report,continued <br /> developing with IBM and RDU a prototype kiosk with inter-active computer to <br /> assist both domestic and international visitors. <br /> Activities to Internationalize the Region's Economy <br /> 1. Served as the grantee for Foreign Trade Zone#93;made numerous <br /> presentations and conducted the meetings of the Rates,Tariff, and Legal Review <br /> Board. Responsible for the FTZ Subzones, the largest of which is #93 B,IBM; <br /> helped IBM to prepare for their subzone's deactivation. Prepared several <br /> boundary modifications,both in the Triangle and around the state. Assisted#93 <br /> Operator,Long International Logistics Services,Inc. in marketing the Zone to <br /> international traders through out the world. <br /> 2. Increased the number and services of foreign trade zones throughout North <br /> Carolina. Lobbied the approval of a new FTZ subzone application for a-major <br /> industry in the Triad. Continued contract with the State of North Carolina, <br /> Department of Commerce to serve as their"grantee representative" for the three <br /> other foreign trade zones in North Carolina. Worked with Charlotte FTZ Board to <br /> gain operator agreement,qualify a new operator and applied (successfully) for a <br /> boundary modification at Zone#57. Also,provided information and supported <br /> the application for a foreign-trade zone at the Piedmont Triad Partnership in <br /> planning their FTZ application. Contracted with the Global TransPark to help <br /> them activate thier recently approved FTZ#214. <br /> 3. Supported the World Trade Center North Carolina as corporate secretary and <br /> executive board member. (Lobbied legislature for$300,000 in educational <br /> program funds for 1997/98.) Assisted in obtaining other public support,served <br /> on nominating and membership committees. The World Trade Center North <br /> Carolina now has a branch office at the Piedmont Triad Partnership. TJCOG <br /> assisted the Center in finding a new,more affordable location following flooding <br /> by Hurricane Fran. <br /> 4. Maintained world trade contacts via the North Carolina World Trade Association, <br /> Elected State Board Secretary, 1993 through 1997 and Triangle Chapter President for <br /> 1995-97. Host for the NCWTA 1997 Annual Conference in Raleigh. The NCWTA <br /> conference brought over 200 international business leaders to the Triangle for the <br /> three-day,May event. Advisor for the State NCWTA Annual Conference in May. <br /> NCWTA has received the Presidential"EXPORT"Award. <br /> 5. In the process of developing with IBM and RDU a'prototype kiosk with inter- <br /> active computer to assist international visitors. Being translated into five <br /> lanuages identified as those of the majority of foreign business visitors. <br />
