4 <br /> Triangle J Council of Governments t <br /> Economic Development Report to Local Governments <br /> Summary of 1996/97 Accomplishments <br /> Strategic Economic Planning and Cooperation <br /> 1. This year our work has included a rapid response to the federal government's <br /> request for applications for EDA money made available following Hurricane <br /> Fran. Staff conducted a survey of local goverrunents to ascertain the extent of <br /> damage to business related infrastructure caused by Hurricane Fran. Worked <br /> with local developers and elected officials to assess the liklyhood of funding <br /> various projects,and prepared the pre-applications. Four pre-applications were <br /> subsequently submitted and were successful. Then full applications were <br /> development,submitted,shepharded through the various reviews and all four <br /> were accepted. Grant have been approved for Garner-$555,000,-for Raleigh- <br /> $500,000,Sanford-$1 million,and (soon)for Chatham County-$400,000. An <br /> economic recovery"Fran grant" for Johnston County was also supported by <br /> Triangle J. <br /> 2. Achieved final approval for extended area telephone service implementation to <br /> and from Pittsboro and eastern Chatham County to and from Apex,Cary and <br /> Raleigh. EAS means flat rate and toll free local calling for our citizens. This <br /> action was appealed to the Federal Communications Commission. <br /> I Promoted regional cooperation among chambers and local governments and <br /> among other key groups involved in the Triangle Region's community anbd <br /> economic development. Served with local economic development groups. <br /> Participated in the Wake County Economic Development Commission's planning <br /> process. <br /> 4. Made presentations to industrial clients for the State Department of Commerce, <br /> for various chambers and for county economic development commissions <br /> throughout the region and the state. Served on international trade and business <br /> development panels and programs throughout the state. <br /> 5. TJCOG provided staff support for the Greater Triangle Regional Council,a <br /> body whose purpose is to create the vision and assist in setting the direction for <br /> the Region' s future. One of the key goals of the GTRC is to examine regional <br /> development choices as the population grows by another 600,000 over the next <br /> generation. The GTRC seeks to build on the recognized assets of the Research <br /> Triangle Park,Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and Umstead State Park. <br /> World Class Region Conference 1998,planning underway. <br /> 6. Worked on the projects with the RDU International Airport staff including <br /> efforts to increase the number of airlines serving the area and the frequency and <br /> destinations of daily passenger and cargo departures.
