(919) 732-2123 For Immediate Release <br /> Fax: (919)"4-1030 November 20,1997 <br /> Siting Process for Piedmont EMC Transmission Line <br /> The following factors were considered in the siting process of Piedmont EMC's New <br /> Hope Transmission line, as defined by the Cooperative's consultant, Duke Engineering & <br /> Services: <br /> (T) cultural and natural resources—archaeological sites, natural heritage sites and historic <br /> buildings; <br /> (2) land cover—types of forests, cropland, pasture, etc.; <br /> (3) property ownership—recognition of public and privately held land and its use; <br /> (4) land use—agricultural, residential, recreational, educational, commercial, etc.; <br /> (5) occupied buildings—residences, community buildings, schools, churches, commercial, as <br /> well-as buffer zones drawn around them; <br /> (6) public visibility—the degree to which a future line would be seen from public roads <br /> (7) residential visibility—the degree to which a future line would be seen from residents <br /> (8) water quality—effects of line on streams and wetlands. <br /> 94 factors were weighted within these eight categories to represent their degree of <br /> influence on line routing. The weights were determined by balancing the requirements of <br /> environmental regulations, sensitivity to impacts and responses from the community. <br />
