094 <br /> DRAFT TEXT PROPOSED FOR INSERTION IN SECTION 2.6 OF COMP PLAN <br /> a) Serve the majority of trips between urban areas with populations of <br /> 25,000 or more; <br /> b) Have corridor movement where the majority of the vehicles using this facility <br /> are making trips of 25 miles or more in length(suitable for statewide or <br /> interstate travel); and <br /> c) Are roads designated as interstate highways by the NC DOT and the <br /> FHWA. <br /> Arterial Roads <br /> Arterial Roads are designed to provide for relatively less interference(access points or driveways <br /> are minimized as much as is practical) to through movement than that of collector roads. Examples of <br /> Arterial Roads include NC 86 and NC 54. Arterial Roads have the following characteristics: <br /> a) Serve movements between all towns and communities with populations over <br /> 3,000,and other traffic generators of equivalent intracounty importance, such as <br /> commercial/industrial areas,county parks,and agricultural areas; <br /> b) Provide intra regional and intercounty service that typically does not duplicate <br /> the service of higher functional classes, but may in some instances; <br /> c) Have corridor movements where most of the vehicles using this facility are <br /> making trips of 10 miles or more in length,and <br /> d) Are designated as NC or US routes by NC DOT. <br /> Collector Roads <br /> Collector roads primarily serve intracounty travel and constitute those roads on which(regardless <br /> of traffic volume) the traffic flow is facilitated between local roads and arterial roads. Consequently, <br /> more moderate speeds may be typical. Access points onto collector roads should be combined when <br /> possible, although collector roads are designed to provide for more access to adjoining land uses than <br /> arterial roads. Examples of collector roads in Orange County include Orange Grove Road and Efland- <br /> Cedar Grove Road. Collector Roads have the following characteristics: <br /> a) Serve smaller towns and communities(population approximately 500)and <br /> link the more rural areas with nearby small townAcommunties, or with routes <br /> of higher classifications; <br /> 2.66 <br />
