2
Y
town provide the opportunity for low-income children who have limited resources to
learn to swim. And programs offered for children with disabilities by trained
professionals can help reduce the rate of drowning overall. Together with student interns
from UNC and Duke, I will document these children in their swimming programs. At the
closing reception of the swimming sessions, we hope the photographs will be included
with the graduation celebration and will be used with the children to describe personal
experiences and feelings associated with their accomplishments. Grant funds will support
artistically collaged renderings to be used for a future community exhibition,
photographic portrait gifts for the young swimmers and families, and publicity
photography for the programs to help support and communicate their missions. After this
pilot year we hope to enhance the project by providing photography workshops in the
pool for children and families.
Artistic Experience
I have been photographing multigenerational couples, newborns, and elderly
populations in the pool throughout my career as a practicing artist, educational therapist,
commercial photographer, and educator. My passion lies within the community outreach
arm at the intersection of these domains. As an artist and educator at the University of
Maryland and Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, I've used water as a
metaphor to describe issues pertaining to control and release, healing and harm, beauty
and fear. The pool provides an opportunity to express and teach these issues using light,
design, and pattern through observation of water and reflection. As a community worker,
teacher, and parent, and daughter, I see water, and the swimming pool specifically, as the
perfect teaching arena combining interactive and practical skills when people of all ages
and development stages are learning to swim or enjoying the healing aspects for therapy.
Over the years I have written over 25 Visual Arts and Educational Organization grants
through the University of Maryland and Maryland State and local art agencies. Since
moving to Orange County,I have received 10 personal project and program grants
supporting my art and community work. I combine my skills and training with a Master's
in Education degree in Special Education as well as a Masters in Fine Art and Digital
Imaging.
Work Samples
Media exhibition reviews are included in this packet.
Additional work samples may be viewed on enclosed DVD and Web site galleries.
Video from a photography workshop at the Greenbelt Aquatic Center may be viewed on
DVD and on Tyroler's Web site at
h"://www.btyroler.com/pgrtraits/workshol?s&grants.htm
Here are more photographs from the Hargraves Pool
WNIV'XV,bt,,roler.com/'Hargraves
