Portraiture In Focus i The WEEKLY Entertainment Column by Deborah Miller-Chapel Hill Magazine 12/6/12 3:16 PM <br /> upcoming exhibit,Getting Layered,6 Women Artists Collaborate on Self- <br /> r <br /> Portraiture,which is an extension of the FRANK.inFocus Fall Photo Festival,I <br /> wondered how in the world I was going to cram all that admiration and <br /> information into one little old column. <br /> It wasn't enough to he just the featured artist,she also signed on to serve as the <br /> project coordinator,and as such assembled a group of five local women who <br /> `4 work creatively in metal,paper,acrylic,oil,wax and mixed media. <br /> "These are women artists whose work is hold and creative—each established in <br /> �t�•t�,`r xr ` k�i-t their oxen fields.Each will prsesent a self portrait constructed directly or <br /> conceptually from the photographic portrait collaboration, Tyroler told me <br /> Deborah Miner. over wine at the Carolina Coffee Shop,where our conversation hop-scotched <br /> RELATED back and forth between past and present.The artists are Peg Bachenheimer, <br /> Preservation Society 40th Anita Wolfenden,Mirinda Kossoff,Luna Ray Lee and Katherine <br /> Anniversary <br /> Retrospective Armaeost <br /> Tyroler went on to explain her role as featured artist."As a photographer,I am <br /> creating a series of environmental,blended photo portraits of each of them in their studios,as well as one in <br /> a swimming pool with her grand daughter.The artists then reinterpret my lens-based portraits,responding <br /> to them to produce altered self-portraits that include my work as well as their own.This process is <br /> something I like to teach in my portrait class at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke,using a highly <br /> collaborative,hybrid documentary/editorial fine art approach." <br /> The exhibit,which opens Dec.u,also involves several related events including an opening reception Dec. <br /> 14.On Dec.20,a sound-image improvisation featuring pianist Alison Weiner of mahaloJazz and local <br /> videographer Nick Beery as they play and respond to Tyroler's projected water imagery.The exhibit is part <br /> of the FRANK:inFocus Community Outreach Program,which is supported in part through funding from <br /> the Downtown Arts Project <br /> All events are free and open to the public.Click on the slideshow to see a fear photos from the <br /> exhibit.
