4
3.Proposed Use of Grant Funds
The North Carolina Symphony will perform hour-long education concerts for a total of 1,600 elementary
students from Orange County Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in Fall 2013.To
accommodate scheduling requirements of the local schools, students will attend one of four concerts
with the full orchestra, all of which will take place in Meymandi Concert Hall at the Duke Energy Center
for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. The concert dates are currently being confirmed in collaboration
with the arts coordinators from these school systems.
The Symphony's Director of Education(to be named by August 2013)for the North Carolina Symphony
collaborates with local teachers and school administrators around the state to develop the Symphony's
music education curriculum. Based on the question, "What makes music, music?,"students are led by
one of the orchestra's conductors through the six components of music: rhythm, dynamics, texture,
tempo, form, and melody.Through interactive lesson plans (included in the teacher's workbook),fun
music games and puzzles, teachers prepare students in advance of the concerts illustrating these
components. For example in 2012-13 students heard a selection from Stravinsky's"Rite of Spring"to
demonstrate rhythm and sang "North Carolina is My Home"to learn about melody.
Teachers from across the state attend a five-hour workshop In August in Raleigh featuring presentations
by the authors of the workbooks for that year.Teachers see and hear each activity and lesson plan from
the workbooks presented by the authors, their students, and other participating educators. An
affordable registration fee includes a copy of the teacher workbook, student guide, a CD of the concert
program, printouts of all presentations and lunch.Teachers can receive 0.5 CEU credits from their
district for attending. The Symphony also provides the five-hour training course online which is also
eligible for 0.5 CEU credits.
The Symphony's music education concerts are a significant contribution to the arts education curriculum
in public schools. For a nominal fee the Symphony provides teachers with detailed curriculum guides;
students receive handbooks that include biographies of the featured composers, background on their
compositions, and general information about the orchestra (see enclosed student guide). The
Symphony's educational materials are available for free online. The education concert program and
corresponding curriculum support the NC Standard Course of Study. The education curriculum provides
students with valuable tools such as counting and storytelling that enhance their learning in other core
subjects, including math and writing.
The demographics of the 1,600 elementary students to be served are: 61%Caucasian, 20%African-
American, 10% Hispanic, and 9%Asian;49%female and 51%male.Approximately 30%percent of the
students served are eligible for free or reduced lunch. *
* Source: based on data from the NC Department of Education.
2
