The ArtsCenter:2013-2014 School Show Series
Jan. 29-31: in-school shows by Mike Wiley (One Noble Journey(3rd-up))
Friday,Jan. 31: School Shows at The ArtsCenter
One Noble Journey is a wonderful one-man play. It is based on the miraculous true lives of three
slaves who overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to gain a life free of Southern Shackles.
Gripping from start to finish, Wiley becomes Henry "Box' Brown a black slave who sees no
alternative but to mail himself in a small crate to freedom. Brown's life unfolds like a Mark Twain
adventure, perilous and somber at times while humorous and heroic throughout. Willing
students and adults join Wiley on stage quickly and quietly becoming characters propelling the
historic action.
FEBRUARY:
Feb. I 1-12: in-school shows by Bright Star Touring Theatre (Lincoln & Tubman (3rd-8th))
Tuesday, Feb. 11: School Shows at The ArtsCenter
Lincoln & Tubman (3rd grade & up): Two of the most iconic figures of the 19th Century come
together to share their roles in ending slavery in America and teach young people on the
importance of education. This production delves into the childhoods of these two remarkable
figures while recreating the key moments and events that shaped both of their lives. The show
seeks to honor and celebrate the many contributions of these two heroic Americans.
Feb. 21-March 5: in-school shows by Soul Street Dance Company (Takin'it to the Streets OR No Bones
About It (K-8th))
Thursday, Feb. 27: School Shows at The ArtsCenter
Takin'It to the Streets (all ages): Catch the excitement of Street Dance, as these energetic
dancers demonstrate its varied styles, discussing the distinctive features and origins of each. This
inspirational group of young men, formerly considered at risk, found focus through dance and
are now working as professionals. They take students on a high-flying participatory trip from
Brazil's Capoeira to New York's break dance. The multi-component forms of Street Dance
meets the music of the 17th century composer Vivaldi.
No Bones About It (K-5th): These impressive dancers exhibit how the human body accomplishes
seemingly super-human leaps and bounds through a network of bones, joints, muscles and the
brain. Demonstrating with props and high-energy dance segments, the dancers reveal how
signals from the brain tell muscles to stretch or contract allowing our bodies to move the way
we want them to.
MARCH:
Mar. 10-12: in-school shows by Guy Davis (The Routes of the Blues (K-8th))
Tuesday, Mar. 1 1: School Shows at The ArtsCenter
The Routes of the Blues: For this show, Guy will perform on the guitar and harmonica and present
the traditional blues music and stories from the Mississippi Delta, providing both a geography
and history lesson deeply rooted in the Black experience in America, making this a great
celebration of African-American History, as well as exploration of music for students.
