2013-2014 Arts Program Grant—Spring 6 <br /> Orange County Arts Commission <br /> The ArtsCenter: School Show Series <br /> FELIX PITRE: Felix Pitre, born in Catano, Puerto Rico, has lived in the United States since the age of <br /> two. Raised in New York City, he attended The New York City High School ForThe Performing Arts <br /> and Hofstra University. As an actor he has worked in every medium including television, film, theatre <br /> and commercials. He has performed his bilingual program, Stories and Songs of Latin America (1974) <br /> throughout the United States including Washington's Kennedy Center and The Smithsonian's Discovery <br /> Theatre. He returned to the Smithsonian in 1993 with a commissioned piece, From Jibaros to Juan Bobo, <br /> Folk Tales of Puerto Rico. Other programs include, The Caribbean and Columbus,More to the Story, a look at <br /> the discovery from a native Puerto Rican's point of view,Animal Tales, learning lessons from humorous <br /> animal stories and songs while exploring our need to care for wildlife and the environment and Mexican <br /> Legends and Songs, exploring Mexico through stories, customs and old favorites like, "Cielito Lindo" and <br /> "La Cucaracha." <br /> His picture books,Juan Bobo and the Pig, and Paco and the Witch, (both illustrated by Christy Hale) were <br /> published by Lodestar Books, Penguin USA, 1993 and 1995 with a Spanish translation of the latter, Paco <br /> y la Bruja, (Osvaldo Blanco.) He also has contributed articles to La Nueva Hola, a national newsletter for <br /> The Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors and is featured in the anthology, Tales Once Told (Scholastic.) <br /> Mr. Pitre has also conducted workshops for students and teachers on Latin American culture, <br /> storytelling and writing including an annual appearance as guest lecturer at Long Island University's <br /> Summer Institute for teachers and for the Education Department of The Kennedy Center. <br /> His hobbies include reading, golf and an occasional discussion with his philosopher friend Santiago.
