• 2013-2014 Arts Program Grant—Spring 5
Orange County Arts Commission
The ArtsCenter: School Show Series
MIKE WILEY PRODUCTIONS: Acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley has spent the last
decade fulfilling his mission to bring educational theatre to young audiences and communities across the
country. In the early days of his career, Wiley found few theatrical resources to shine a light on key
events and figures in African-American history. To bring these stories to life, he started his own
production company.
Through his performances, Wiley has introduced countless students and communities to the legacies of
Emmett Till, Henry "Box" Brown and more. His most recent works include a one-man play based on
Tim Tyson's memoir Blood Done Sign My Name and The Parchman Hour, an ensemble production
celebrating the bravery and determination of the Freedom Riders who risked their lives to desegregate
Southern interstate bus travel in 1961.
Mike Wiley has a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the
2010 Lehman Brady Visiting Joint Chair Professor in Documentary Studies and American Studies at
Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.In addition to his numerous school
and community performances, he has also appeared on Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel and
National Geographic Channel and has been featured in Our State magazine and on PBS' North Carolina
Now and WUNC's The State of Things.
Information from artist's website (Ln mikewiley_productions.com)
NC SHAKES: Mark Woods and Stuart Brooks founded the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival in
February of 1977 as a small, resident professional theatre company dedicated to producing the world's
classics. Today, NCShakes continues to set the standard for creative excellence in theater and arts
education in North Carolina. NCShakes' mission is to entertain, educate and enrich North Carolina
students and citizens with quality professional productions of the world's great plays and with in-school
and life-long learning opportunities.
Since 1977, NCShakes has achieved the following: Mounted over 165 professional productions; Filled
nearly 2 million seats at venues statewide; Made nearly 2,000 tour stops statewide; Performed in schools
in every North Carolina county; Presented school matinees to over 12,000 students each year;
Presented Dickens' A Christmas Carol annually since 1977.
NCShakes attracts the highest caliber actors, directors, designers and technicians from all over the
United States. NCShakes is associated with Actors' Equity Association, the union of professional actors
and stage managers, and operates under an agreement between the union and the League of Resident
Theatres.
With Shakespeare To Go, NCShakes promises an interactive experience that will enrich your school's
study of the world's greatest playwright. Shakespeare To Go features direct audience contact between
actor and audience - literally. Actors incorporate the student audience into every performance, giving
students the valuable experience of both observing and participating in a live performance of the Bard's
work. The program offers minimal use of set and costumes, sharing with students a primary focus on
the language of Shakespeare, while also allowing performances to take place in almost any venue a
school can offer. The program encourages its audience to use its imagination and sense of play, as actors
double and triple the roles they perform in any given production.
Information from artist's website (http'//www.ncshakes.org)
