Festival Coordinator Bio
Gerry Williams returns in 2013 for his twelfth year as the Coordinator of The Carrboro
Music Festival. He was an initial member of the Carrboro Music Festival committee in
1997 and was then responsible for assembling the participating musicians. In 2002 he
was asked by Mayor Mike Nelson to take over full responsibility for the event and with
the able assistance of a volunteer committee and Carrboro's Recreation and Parks
Department, has steered the festival in an invigorating direction. Officials estimate that
10,000 attendees strolled throughout Carrboro's downtown in 2012 and enjoyed the
sights and sounds of 185 diverse performers at 25 venues. As always, diversity was of
paramount importance with widely different musical styles represented by a mosaic of
racial, ethnic and age groups.
Mr. Williams has forty years of professional music experience since finishing the
American Studies Program at The University of Maryland. He was a researcher at The
Library of Congress' Folksong Archive and for The Labor Union Song Project. He has
owned and operated independent CD and record stores in Washington, DC and Carrboro,
NC, and has done booking for a well-known international musician as well as local and
regional artists. He was the Music Program Director at The ArtsCenter for two years. He
also has done special event planning for Carrboro and non-profits in Orange and
Chatham Counties as well as benefits for local musicians without Health Insurance, two
area schools, Asian Tsunami relief, and various community non-profits.
