A Dance Residency with Jody Cassell Day 2 Lewis, Kennedy Date : 4/13/11 Title of Lesson: Seeds Goal(s)—Students will review the process of seeds growing into plants Objective(s)— • Students will makes the shapes of four different seeds, be planted in the earth, stalks with grow; buds will develop; flowers will bloom and dance. Seeds = sunflower, moon flower, zinnia, nasturtium Concept(s)— Seeds need earth, sun, water to grow Equipment: Music: Eleven Richard Crandell; Pizz Ah! Eric Chapelle. Vol. 2; Pathway Puzzle, Eric Chappelle Vol. 2;Caribbean Leaps Eric Chappelle, Vol. 2; Walt's Waltz, Eric Chappelle Vol. 4 Sunflower, moonflower, zinnia and nasturtium seeds Props for flower, butterfly, grass, Multicolored scarves for dancing flowers Hula hoop with yellow, pink red streamers for the sun Student sized yellow tube with yellow scarf and streamers for sun Toy watering can and toy shovel Burlap strip with large slits for students to emerge from seeds to flowers Planting poem: Dig, dig, dig, Plant, plant, plant, Pat, pat, pat, Water, water Teaching procedure: • Sequence song • BrainDance©to nursery rhymes • Stage for seeds, show seeds, ask for verbal descriptions from students • Using creative imaginations paint self like seeds, physically make each seed • To music tip-toe and when music stops make one of the seeds • Plant seeds under the burlap strip • Using hula hoop sun warms the seeds (teaching artist/teacher as sun ; student using smaller sun prop) • Seeds grow up through slits • Followed by student with student prop for sun • To exit: crawling through Sun hula hoop • Summary, Review and Reflection: Sentence summary to friend • Teacher Role: Participant/observer Follow UP: Please have students draw a picture of their experience Have students dictate a sentence about their picture/experience.
