•
' The ArtsCenter
• • Always Inspiring.
August 18, 2009
Dear Central Elementary Teachers,
My name is Tracy Thomas, and I am the Arts in Education Coordinator for The ArtsCenter in
Carrboro. For those of you who are not familiar with The ArtsCenter, it is a local non-profit
organization that essentially uses education, performance and exhibition to bring the arts to the
surrounding community.
As part of a unique partnership with Central Elementary and funding from The Grable
Foundation and Orange County Arts Commission, each grade level will again this year have the
opportunity to work with a professional teaching artist to design a short-term residency that is
directly linked with classroom curriculum. In other words, a teaching artist will come into your
classroom for a short period of time to teach a particular content area through arts integration,
which will give your students a chance to learn through different formats, as well as provide you
with new teaching tools and techniques.
Enclosed you will find information on the two residency models that will be carried out
this year at Central Elementary, with Arts-Based Learning Experience (ABLE)
residencies being implemented in grades K, 1, 2, 3 and 5, and a Page to Stage residency
in grade 4. Please read over the enclosed materials for your particular residency model
and begin thinking about ideas with your grade level team, as you will have the flexibility
to choose the curriculum content you would like to see covered, as well as the art form(s)
you are interested in(drama, visual art, writing, poetry, dance, etc.).
I have also included information on your role as a teacher during the residency, as well as
the role of the teaching artist. In addition, you will find a list of"first steps" so you are
clear as to how the planning process for your residency will unfold.
As a former elementary teacher myself, I understand how valuable your time is both in and out of
the classroom. I will be working with you and the teaching artists throughout the process to
ensure you have a valuable experience that is both efficient and organized.
I look forward to working with each of you!
Sincerely,
Tracy Thomas
Arts in Education Coordinator
The ArtsCenter
