2 <br /> BACKGROUND: To determine the extent of forest disturbance since the 1988 aerial photography, <br /> (continued) the researchers analyzed building permit issuances between 1988 and 1996. They <br /> estimate that at least 10% of the prime habitat areas have been lost or reduced in <br /> size in the past nine years. The remaining prime forests, together with the <br /> significant natural areas identified in the Inventory of Natural Areas, constitute <br /> Core Areas for wildlife habitat. The report also shows buffers and connections <br /> between Core Areas. <br /> The report includes several recommendations for achieving wildlife habitat <br /> preservation goals. <br /> RECOMMENDATION: <br /> For information purposes only. The Wildlife Habitat Study will be incorporated <br /> into the Natural Areas Element of the Orange County Comprehensive Plan, <br /> which is in preparation. <br />
