2 <br /> PROCLAMATION <br /> FOR <br /> RID OUR ROADS OF RUDENESS CAMPAIGN <br /> IN <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> WHEREAS, while most drivers are to be commended for their safety-consciousness, kindness and <br /> courtesy, some drivers display hostility and impatience on our roadways; and <br /> WHEREAS, the behavior of those hostile drivers may cause fear, stress and anxiety for the <br /> majority of the population who practice safe driving habits; and <br /> WHEREAS, these aggressive driving habits are manifested in such behaviors as running or rolling <br /> through stop lights or stop signs, tailgating, speeding, disregarding right-of-way, obscene <br /> gestures, reckless driving, and ignoring the rights of others; and <br /> WHEREAS, a group of concerned citizens, the Chapel Hill Police Department, the Carrboro Police <br /> Department, the Hillsborough Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff's <br /> Department and local businesses have joined in a cooperative effort to promote and <br /> reward safe and courteous driving; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Chapel Hill News will publish license plate numbers of drivers identified by citizens <br /> and police officers, as displaying either courteous or rude behavior; and <br /> WHEREAS, the good drivers will be rewarded with recognition and gifts donated by local businesses. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim September 15 <br /> through December 26, 1997 as the <br /> RID OUR ROADS OF RUDENESS CAMPAIGN <br /> in Orange County and urges all citizens to support this effort by driving carefully and <br /> practicing kind, courteous and safety-conscious driving habits at all times. <br /> This the 16th day of September, 1997. <br /> William L.
