2 •- <br /> Orange County Schools High School Standards Committee Recommendations (July <br /> 17, 1997) <br /> The Orange County Schools High School Standards Committee met on July 17, 1997 <br /> in the Central Office Boardroom and came to the following recommendations for the <br /> purpose of beginning preliminary planning for a new 9-12 high school (1000 student <br /> capacity) in the Orange County School System. <br /> The Committee reviewed data supplied for the square footage considerations used in <br /> planning East Chapel Hill High and data supplied by the North Carolina State Board of <br /> Education (Facilities Guidelines.January, 1997)and suggested the following: <br /> 1.) That the new Orange County High School follow the square footage assign- <br /> ments used in planning East Chapel Hill High as they offer a more reasonable <br /> and accommodating footprint for High School students and teachers (e.g.,State <br /> Board Guidelines recommend 750 square feet per standard classrooms— <br /> English,Math,Social Studies,and Foreign Language and East Chapel Hill <br /> High calls for 850 square feet for these same areas. The 850 makes much more <br /> sense when one calls into consideration present and future classroom demands <br /> and technology enhancements). <br /> 2.) The Vocational Courses to be offered at the new Orange County High School is <br /> currently under examination and what flexibility for cross enrollments (if any) <br /> is also under study. <br /> 3.) This planned facility would not include in its preliminary stages an auxiliary <br /> gymnasium or an athletic stadium(The school would have an athletic <br /> component with appropriate practice and game fields,but would not have <br /> a stadium complex similar to the one at Orange High School in this initial <br /> construction phase). <br /> 4.) A minimum of 50 acres of land would be necessary to handle a 1000 student <br /> facility(State Guidelines call for 30 acres and 1 additional acre for each 100 <br /> ADM). The minimum here is a reasonable number when looking at rapidly <br /> disappearing land parcels here in the central piece of Orange County. <br /> 5.) The total square footage of the building(s)would be approximately 177,000 <br /> square feet(129,000 square feet for direct work area and 48,000 square feet <br /> for support areas equaling out to about 176 square feet per student). <br /> The High School Standards Committee will continue to meet to deal with issues of <br /> Vocational courses and suggested support areas throughout the building complex. <br /> 09/97 <br />
