Letter from David Brook, SHPO re: Meadowmont.
j. Battle of Lindley's Mill.
Dickinson reported that John Braxton and his wife are historians in Alamance County and are
both on the Preservation Commission in Alamance County. Several years ago Alamance County
hired a local professor to write a pamphlet on the Battle of Lindley's Mill. This battle was to try
to stop Burke from being kidnapped by Fanning and taken off to Wilmington. It was
unsuccessful so as a result, it was left off the history books. This was quite a battle and lasted
longer than almost any Revolutionary battle that was held. The Commission should obtain a
copy of this pamphlet as Alamance County was originally part of Orange County.
k. Comments of Ms. Earnhardt's property,Chapel Hill Township.
Dickinson reported that Ms. Earnhardt asked Dickinson to look at a little house that she owns on
some of her property to see it has any value to save or move. This is a little end gable house It
has a center door and two windows with a center chimney. It was built in 1890-1910 as a tenant
house, very lightly framed with 2x4 studs 2 '/: feet apart. There is a loft upstairs and a gable rear
"L" that has had all of the siding removed already. There is a heart pine floor for the rear "L"
that is mostly eaten by termites. The house had electricity but no running water. Someone had
been living in the house for years and had the electricity taken out, but they moved out after
hurricane Fran.
Dickinson made the determination that this house was not valuable enough for the Commission
to strenuously ask Ms. Earnhardt to move this subdivision out and around it. The house was
going to sit right where a cul-de-sac is proposed. It is not a house that could be used now. It is
very flimsily built and in rough shape.
AGENDA ITEM#7: ADJOURNMENT
Allison then adjourned the meeting.
8
