I
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
BOARD COMMENTS item # 4
Date: August 20, 1997
SUBJECT: Age and Other Comparative Information on School Facilities
DEPARTMENT: Commissioners INFORMATION CONTACT:
Alice Gordon
ATTACHMENTS:
1. Age of Elementary Schools
2. Age of Secondary Schools
3. School Facilities in the Orange County Schools
4. School Facilities in the Chapel HiII-Carrboro City Schools
PURPOSE: To provide the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and
others with comparative information concerning school facilities-in
Orange County, including their age.
BACKGROUND: White serving as Chair of the School Capital Needs
Task Advisory Task Force in 1991, 1 visited all the schools in Orange
County. The most striking fact was that both school systems had a
significant range of facilities, from older to newer and from more to
less crowded. Thus the major contrast in school facilities seemed to
be within a given system, rather than between systems.
Since that time, new schools have been built in both systems
and the BOCC continues to consider both new-buildings and changes
to existing buildings. To obtain a perspective on the range of school
facilities, I asked the staff to obtain information on existing schools in
the Orange County Schools (OCS) and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools (CHCCS). This information is presented in the four
attachments described in the next section.
