7 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY YOUTH COUNCIL <br /> (OCYC) <br /> PROPOSED COMMUNITY NETWORKS <br /> • The Family Resource Centers and Neighborhood Associations could serve as a mechanism to <br /> recruit student members and help identify teen needs in the community. <br /> • The Town of Carrboro, in cooperation with Time-Warner Cable, has offered to assist in the <br /> development of a Cable-TV show to discuss youth issues. <br /> • The Youth Committee of the Orange County Human Relations Commission has expressed an <br /> interest and strong support in assisting in the development of the Youth Council. <br /> • The Youth Services Advisory Committee has offered to provide support to the Council. <br /> • Members of the Youth Council are interested in inviting adult members of the community to act <br /> as chaperons for student events. <br /> • OCYC could work with the Sheriff's Department in developing a Teen Court. <br /> • Federal monies are available for both drug abuse and runaway prevention activities that could be <br /> sought and utilized to develop programs that will benefit all our youth. <br /> • The Chamber of Commerce,particularly the members of SCORE, may be available to assist the <br /> teens in writing business plans for their projects and act as mentors. <br /> • 4H is planning a program scheduled to begin in Fall `97 that will teach small business <br /> management and has some funding and oversight capabilities. <br /> • The Economic Development Commission may provide assistance in locating the property for the <br /> proposed youth-run coffee shop. <br /> • The Boards of Education: Several of the students are interested in becoming members, or at least <br /> student advisors to the school boards. <br /> • Carrboro Arts Council: may be used for youth-sponsored events. <br /> • Orange County, the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro Recreation and Parks Departments, and <br /> the YMCA have offered to help coordinate various events. <br /> 4 <br />
