9 <br /> s <br /> TRIANGLE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION <br /> FALL 1996 GRANTS <br /> The ArtsCenter $6,000.00 <br /> The School Show Series reaches up to 20,000 middle-school and younger students a year, showing them how <br /> learning can be enhanced through theater, music, puppetry, dance, storytelling, and history/culture <br /> presentations. <br /> Building Together Ministries $5,000.00 <br /> Women Together is a new program in Halifax Court specifically designed to meet the education,job training, <br /> employment and parenting skills needs of this community. <br /> Candles of Hope $10,000.00 <br /> This project will establish hands-on training in life and business skills in making candles so that participants <br /> may move from dependence upon social services to a financially independent lifestyle. <br /> Center for Community Self-Help $10,000.00 <br /> Working with the Walltown Community Association, this project will purchase and rehabilitate homes for re- <br /> sale to low-income families who want to realize the dream of home ownership in this historic community. <br /> Council for Entrepreneurial Development $2,500.00 <br /> This grant will provide minority and women entrepreneurs scholarships for the Premier FastTrac training <br /> program equips entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills, and insights necessary to start and grow successful <br /> businesses. <br /> Duke Cancer Patient Support Program $7,000.00 <br /> Cancer Companions are volunteers who help alleviate the stress associated with the outpatient treatment of <br /> cancer by offering support and respite care to patients with cancer and their families. <br /> Durham Arts Council $5,200.00 <br /> Durham Arts Council, Hayti Heritage Center, the ArtsCenter, Orange County Arts Commission, and United <br /> Arts of Raleigh and Wake County annually send artists into four school systems that serve 120,000 children <br /> to determine their needs for artist services and collaboratively train artists to increase their effectiveness in the <br /> classroom. <br /> Durham Rescue Mission $9,000.00 <br /> The Victory Program conducts individual assessments of each participant to determine what educational and <br /> vocational assistance they need to find a job. The Rescue Mission has relationships with Durham employers <br /> who have stated their expectations and agreed to hire graduates of this program. <br /> Durham Woodchucks $4,300.00 <br /> Funds will purchase equipment for this all-volunteer group, which cuts, splits, and delivers wood to low, <br /> income families who heat their homes with wood. <br /> Edgemont Community Center $7,500.00 <br /> This year-long project will harness the energy of 30 local youth, ages 7-14, who will study African <br /> percussion music and its effects upon African-American culture as a way to improve their literacy. The <br /> young people will not only perform the music, but will also produce a publication about their experience. <br /> Exchange Clubs Child Abuse Prevention Center in Durham $8,260.00 <br /> The Parent Enrichment Program is designed for at-risk parents of children ages 6 to 12. This type of <br /> intervention program, which helps typically low-income and/or single parents learn how to deal positively <br /> with normal parent-child issues, has been proven to significantly reduce the incidences of abusive behavior by <br /> the parent. <br /> Genesis Home $10,000.00 <br /> This transitional housing program for homeless families is forced to turn away an average of 20 families per <br /> month; their expansion will allow it to shelter 12 additional families and add a center for homeless children. <br /> Page 4 of 5 <br />
