10
Girl Scouts, Pines of Carolina Council $4,000.00
Through Operation Resolve and Solve, girl scout troops in Halifax Court, Heritage Park, Few Gardens, and
the Hargraves Center will assess violence in their own communities and design and implement service
projects to address this violence and heighten community awareness.
Habitat for Humanity of Durham County/Orange County $8,000.00
The Durham and Orange Chapters of Habitat for Humanity have collaborated together to hire a joint director
of development who will help to raise money for both organizations, capitalizing on the close ties between
these two counties.
NC Wheelchair Athletes Foundation $3,400.00
This grant will provide specialized sports-training equipment; information on up-to-date training methods for
qualified sports trainers and coaches; and special seminars for training assistants to enable an increased
number of wheelchair athletes to fully participate in statewide athletic events.
Orange Correctional Center Community Resource Council- $6,000.00
Family visitation at this minimum security prison in Hillsborough encourages the continuation of family ties
during incarceration. Inmates will help build and landscape a play space that will allow these fathers to play
with their young children, giving these families some quality time together during their brief visits.
Orange-Durham Coalition for Battered Women $5,000.00
In the last three years, the Coalition's 24-hour crisis line has received nearly triple the number of calls, half of
which are from Orange County. To meet this increased demand, the Coalition will collaborate with the
Women's Center to offer counseling and case management services out of their office in Orange County.
Home Community Development Corporation $10,000.00
Passage Home works with families who are homeless or very low-income and ex-offender mothers and their
children. This project will support a children's enrichment program so their parents can focus on family self-
sufficiency.
Raleigh Rescue Mission $6,900.00
The Mission's Learning Center and Computer Lab currently provides 144 homeless and low-income
individuals access to employment training opportunities and computer literacy, and their numbers are
growing. This grant will help support a part-time teacher at this facility.
St.Philip's Episcopal Church $7,000.00
This grant will help this cooperative short term child care and parent education center for homeless parents
who don't have the ability to commit to long-term childcare programs and need quality, short-term care.
Town of Holly Springs $10,000.00
This grant will support an after school and summer camp program that will offer tutoring and provide
structured activities designed to boost self-esteem, provide leadership skills, teach conflict resolution
strategies, and help young people deal with peer pressure.
Triangle Open Space Network/Triangle Land Conservancy $7,500.00
This grant will help establish a network to encourage collaboration among people working for public
environmental parks in the area; increase cooperation on open-space issues among governments, landowners
and non-profits; and eventually result in an open-space plan for the entire Triangle region.
Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers $4,071.03
Residents of this residential self-help program serving drug addicts and alcoholics will learn photography and
creative writing skills as tools for communication and self-discovery. The program, which TROSA residents
helped design, stresses vocational training, education, and communication skills.
Wake Co. Literacy Council $5,000.00
One third of the inmates at the NC Correctional Institution for Women are functionally illiterate, a fact that
dims their prospects of maintaining a job and staying out of trouble once they leave prison. This project will
train tutors specifically recruited to work with motivated student inmates, who will learn reading and writing
skills from their tutor and participate in a Reading Incentive Program.
