The survey is part of the
Future of Agriculture Study that also includes an analysis of long-term
trends in Orange County. In addition, at its May 15 work session, the
BOCC directed the Economic Development Commission and the
Agricultural Districts Advisory Board to pursue a cooperative work
plan to meet the objectives of the Agriculture component of the EDC's
strategic plan. EDC and Planning Staff have been discussing a
cooperative work plan, and representatives of the EDC met with the
ADAB at its May 21 meeting. EDC/ADAB have identified three (3)
major areas of interest that will address mutual goals: (1) Support of
legislation that can improve economic outlook for farmers; (2) Further
exploration of Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) and Transfer of
Development Rights (TDR) programs; and (3) Education and
Outreach. For this third topic, a photo-essay or video production that
chronicles the "life and times" of the Orange County farmer was
discussed as having potentially far-reaching impact in educating the
populace about the critical issues facing agriculture.
