Table 2: Programs at the SportsPlex 16 <br /> Aquatics <br /> Public swim From before-work lap swims to Sunday evening family swims <br /> Swim lessons Private or group <br /> Targeted swim lessons Two programs: 1) One for area fourth graders in collaboration with the <br /> elementary schools, and 2)privately funded swim lessons aimed at increasing <br /> minority capability in swimming for fun and safety <br /> Swim teams The swim teams of Orange High, Chapel Hill High, and East Chapel Hill <br /> High call the SportsPlex home <br /> Swim meets The three high school teams, New Wave, Raleigh Swim Association, and the <br /> Chapel Hill YMCA hold multiple swim meets each at the SportsPlex; the <br /> place really rocks when more than 1000 swimmers, coaches, parents and <br /> vlounteers are there; the only venu offering both fitness and skating during <br /> the long, empty moments characteristic of swim meets <br /> Safety courses Beginning classes through life guard certification classes; Collaboration with <br /> the UNC Safe Kids Program(see Chapel Hill Herald for April 20, 1997) <br /> Dive-in-movies Swim or float on your raft while a film is projected on the wall <br /> Water walking Low impact aerobic workouts against the resistance of the water; the effect of <br /> 2 hours of walking in 30 minutes <br /> Water aerobics Aerobic exercise classes set to music; more varied than water walking <br /> Aqua toning Muscle toning and tightening using the resistance of the water plus free <br /> weights without the risk of injury <br /> Swim-a-thons Distance swimming right at home. Win a T-shirt if you make it to <br /> Wrightsvill Beach. <br /> Scuba lessons The SportsPlex offers its pools to outside groups teaching scuba(see Chapel <br /> Hill Herald for 26 April, 1997) <br /> Aqua-Flex and physical Aqua-flex is a program specifically designed for individuals recovering from <br /> therapy surgery, needing rehabilitation, or dealing with arthritic-type joint problems; <br /> stresses range of motion, mobility, and strengthening. The UNC Hospitals <br /> Dept. of Occupational and Physical Therapy uses the SportsPlex pool for <br /> patients; a long-term contract is being negociated <br /> Fitness <br /> Weight and cardiovascular A broad selection of high quality machines and free weights for training or <br /> machines general fitness <br /> Personal trainer Advice and training in the use of the machines and free weights <br /> Land aerobics Classes in several aerobics styles during the week <br /> Senior Day A new program for May 1 intended to introduce the aquatics and fitness <br /> centers to seriors <br /> Fitness challenge Swim/Bike/Run to the Beach: Mileage to Wilmington and the "route" set up <br /> on the SportsPlex stationary bikes, etc. Fifty participants so far. <br /> Tae-Kwon-Do Basic martial arts classes <br /> Yoga Classes in this recognized method of achieving flexibility, strength, and <br /> awareness of body, mind, emotions and spirit.
