1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: May 5, 1997
Agenda Abstract
Item
SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION FOR NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK
DEPARTMENT: Planning PUBLIC HEARING: Yes X . No
BUDGET AMENDMENT REQUIRED: Yes X No
ATTACHMENTS: INFORMATION CONTACT:
Donald R. Belk
Proclamation Planner II/Preservation X2594
PHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Mebane 227-2031
Durham 688-7331
Chapel Hill 967-9251
PURPOSE: To proclaim May 11 - 17, 1997 National Historic Preservation Week.
BACKGROUND: This year, National Historic Preservation Week will be observed May 11 - 17. The
theme chosen by the National Trust for Historic Preservation is "Preservation Begins
at Home".
This theme celebrates the role of historic preservation in saving and enhancing the
buildings where we live. For many Orange County citizens, the Spring and Christmas
tours of restored homes in Hillsborough offer a first introduction to historic
preservation. For others, the renovation of a Cedar Grove farmhouse or a Carrboro
bungalow represents the first step towards hands-on involvement in preservation. For
still others, the preservation of older residential buildings is a remarkably effective
tool for bringing new life to historic neighborhoods in Chapel Hill.
"Preservation Begins at Home" is also a call to activism. Orange County has many
landmark buildings and neighborhoods that help to define its character. The Historic
Preservation Commission contends that if we are to be successful in savings these
special places, we must be vigilant in protecting them and imaginative in developing
strategies to keep them alive. We must also take an active, informed role in the
discussions and decisions that shape the future of the communities that we call home.
A copy of the proclamation is attached.
RECOMMENDATION:The Administration recommends approval of the proclamation for National Historic
Preservation Week 1997.
