Because of this uncertainty, the Board of Commissioners
included $62,000 in a non-departmental contingency account, to pay the salary,
benefits, and one-time start-up costs for six new Deputy Sheriff I positions for up to
three months in fiscal year 1996-97.
The building contractor informs us that the work schedule is being accelerated and that
the facility may open in mid to late summer. Because new deputy positions require up
to six months for recruitment, selection, training and certification, it is necessary to have
these new positions authorized by the Board of Commissioners now.
Other additional staff related to the jail addition have been requested by the Sheriff as
part of the 1997-98 budget. These requests are currently being studied, and a
recommendation on these positions will be made as part of the 1997-98 Manager's
Recommended Budget.
Recommendation
The Manager recommends that the Board of County Commissioners authorize six new
permanent full time Deputy Sheriff I positions for the Sheriffs Department for the new
jail addition.
