The report also contains a draft
Request for Proposals, to be used in evaluating consultants' qualifications to complete the
nomination of the Cedar Grove Rural Historic District to the National Register of Historic
Places.
Background. Orange County conducted an inventory of historic architectural resources
within its jurisdiction during 1992-93. During the inventory, Cedar Grove was identified
as potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a Rural Historic
District. In July 1993, it was placed on the National Register Study List by the North
Carolina National Register Advisory Committee.
In early 1995, a study of a National Register nomination for a Cedar Grove Crossroads
historic district was completed by Shannon Sexton, a Planning Department intern for
completion of a UNC-CH masters thesis project. The study entailed numerous on-site
interviews with Cedar Grove residents as well as in-depth historical research. During the
study, many.residents became aware of the National Register process, and Ms. Sexton's
efforts garnered considerable support for a National Register listing. The study, which
included a draft National Register nomination, was critiqued by the National Register
Coordinator of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The Coordinator
recommended that the historic district parameters be expanded to include the historical
landscapes associated with the crossroads area. The study, with SHPO comments, was
presented during a statewide preservation consultants' workshop held in Orange County
in October, 1995.
Attachment#7
