During an
inventory of Orange County historical architecture conducted during 1992-1993, this area
was identified as potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a Rural
Historic District. In July 1993, Cedar Grove was placed on the National Register Study
List by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, which is the first step
toward placement on the National Register.
What is the National Register of Historic Places?
The National Register of Historic Places is our country's official list of buildings,
structures, sites, and districts that are deemed significant to the Nation's heritage.
Listing on the National Register means that a place is worthy of preservation for its
significance to American history, architecture, archeology, and culture. Listing on the
National Register of Historic Places is an honorary designation only It places no
obligation or restrictions on private property owners.
During 1995, a planning intern from the Department of City and Regional Planning at the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Shannon Sexton, prepared a draft National
kegister nomination document as a student project. Ms.* Sexton researched the history of
Cedar Grove, conducted several interviews and site visits, and met with many residents of
the crossroads area. At that time, many of you expressed an interest in protecting the
close-knit character of the Cedar Grove community.
Attachment#4
