1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No.-J-1
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: April 1, 1997
SUBJECT:
Orange County Senior Games
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC HEARING: Yes X No
Orange County Recreation and Parks
ATTACHMENT(S) : INFORMATION CONTACT:
Proclamation Robin Fuqua, Local Coordinator
TELEPHONE NUMBER:
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Chapel Hill - 968-4501
Mebane - 227-2031
Durham - 688-7331
PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 21 - April 27th as Orange County Senior Games
Events Days and to encourage citizens age 55 and over to participate.
BACKGROUND: The first Orange County Senior Games were held in May 1988, with 69
participants in athletic events ranging from softball throw to tennis, and 100
Orange County citizens volunteered. In the years since 1988, the numbers have steadily
grown, as we placed more emphasis on year-round programs of wellness, and added new
athletic events. In 1996, the local games participants increased 67 percent from the
previous year. This was partially due to the addition of SilverArts, a component of
Senior Games which allows adults 55 and over to express their creativity in four art
areas: Literary, Visual, Heritage, and Performing Arts. The purpose of SilverArts is
to promote achievement and excellence in the arts among older adults.
RECOMMENDATION(S) :
The Manager recommends that the Board of County Commissioners proclaim and declare
April 21-April 27, 1997 as Orange County Senior Games Events Days.
