16 <br /> AGENDA#I <br /> MEMORANDUM <br /> TO: Town Council Members <br /> FROM: Rosemary I.Waldorf,Mayor <br /> SUBJECT: Resolution Regarding Collection of Hotel-Motel Taxes at the Carolina Inn <br /> DATE: March 17, 1997 <br /> Earlier this year, the University informed the Town and Orange County that it would cease <br /> collecting hotel-motel taxes for guests staying at the Carolina Inn in connection with University <br /> business. <br /> I understand that the University administration made this decision after consideration of the <br /> legal duties and obligations of the University.as a State institution. I .believe the University <br /> administration acted in good faith based on its responsibilities and interpretation of current laws, <br /> including the cummat version of the Town's local act authorizing the occupancy tax. <br /> However, I feel equally strongly that the Town should request legislation by the'Genual <br /> Assembly this year so that the 'Town will receive hotel-motel taxes from all guests at the <br /> Carolina Inn: <br /> I request that the Council adopt the following resolution. <br />
