Belk
(1) Letter to Moses Carey from Dolly Hunter, ADAB Chair Preservation Planner/X2594
(2) Proclamation
PHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Mebane 227-2031
Durham 688-7331
Chapel Hill 967-9251
PURPOSE: To commend the family of Robert P. and Aubrey C. Nutter for their contributions to
Orange County's farmland preservation goals.
BACKGROUND: The Nutter family owns and operates the Mapleview Farm, a 400-acre dairy operation
located on Dairyland Road in Bingham Township.
The Nutters have owned Mapleview Farm since 1963. Throughout the years the Nutters
have demonstrated their commitment to Orange County by outstanding stewardship of
their land and involvement in their community.
Most recently, the Nutter family has taken steps to ensure the long-term viability of their
farm. After subdividing part of their land for residential development, the Nutters donated
a conservation easement of over one hundred acres to the Triangle Land Conservancy in
December 1995. In November, 1996, they opened a processing plant to bottle their farm-
produced milk under the brand name "Mapleview Farm Milk". The product, sold in
returnable glass bottles, is widely available throughout the Triangle area. The Board of
Commissioners, at their meeting of December 17, 1996, designated Mapleview Farm as a
Voluntary Agricultural District. Through planning and diversification, the Nutters have
provided an example of how farming families can ensure their way of life will remain part
of the Orange County landscape for generations to come.
Dolly Hunter, Chairperson of the Agricultural Districts Advisory Board, has requested
formal recognition of Robert P. and Aubrey C. Nutter and family for their efforts in
promoting farmland preservation.
RECOMMENDATION: The Administration recommends awarding the attached Proclamation to the Nutter Family
of Mapleview Farm for their commitment to farmland preservation.
