Kittrell, Assistant County Manager <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBERS: -- ext. 2300 <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> Mebane 221-2031 <br /> PURPOSE: To approve the composition of the Skill Development Center Advisory Committee <br /> and receive an update on Skill Development Center implementation. <br /> BACKGROUND: The agencies scheduled to co-locate in the Skill Development Center(Joint <br /> Orange Chatham Community Action Agency, Department of Social Services-Work First Program, <br /> Orange County Literacy Council,Employment Security Commission and Durham Technical <br /> Community College)have met with the County Manager's Office to suggest a possible composition <br /> for the Skill Development Center Advisory Committee. Also,the 24-member Skill Development <br /> Program Board,who completed its work in December 1995,were polled to determine if they would <br /> like to be considered for appointment to the committee. Five members indicated they would <br /> consider serving if appointed. <br /> Proposed Composition of Skill Development Advisory Committee <br /> The Skill Development Center Mission is: to provide adequate training and services to allow all <br /> Orange County citizens to be self-sufficient and free of all public and private assistance. <br /> The mission will be accomplished by: supporting a holistic approach to coordinating skill <br /> development and job search services to citizens; creating a"one stop"information center for skill <br /> development and employment services; establishing formal linkages between existing supportive <br /> services and skill development opportunities; co-locating agencies offering training and <br /> employment services; designing training to better match emerging jobs and include but go beyond <br /> the basic"3 Rs",providing world of work skill training; and incentives to employers. <br />
