' 1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: January 21, 1997
Action Agenda
Item# 8-61'
SUBJECT: VERIFICATION OF SECONDARY ROAD NAMES IN ORANGE COUNTY
DEPARTMENT: PLANNING PUBLIC HEARING: Yes_x—No
BUDGET AMENDMENT REQUI] ED: Yes_x No
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: Gene Bell
Ext. 2589
- Correspondence and NCDOT Road List
-Road Name Corrections Prepared by Staff TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough - 732-8181
Durham - 688-7331
Mebane - 227-2031
Chapel Hill - 967-9251
PURPOSE: To consider corrections to secondary road names in Orange County.
BACKGROUND: The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro (DCHC)Metropolitan Planning Organization
(MPO)has been invited by the N.C. Department of Transportation(NCDOT)to review
and update the names of roads on the State's secondary road system for counties in the
MPO. The MPO has supplied the requisite materials to member counties for review.
The original list supplied by NCDOT contained numerous errors and archaic road names.
Planning staff obtained a more up-to-date list from the NCDOT District Office in
Graham and was granted an extension of the January 13 deadline by Dan Thomas of
NCDOT Statewide Planning to allow more time to work with the new list.
Planning staff compared the NCDOT listing with in-house resources (maps and road
listings created as part of the countywide addressing project) and compiled proposed
corrections as noted in the attachments. The NCDOT list covers all state secondary
roads in the County(rural as well as urban). Staff compiled the revised list by planning
jurisdiction and to the best of our knowledge, what we have shown for the towns is
correct. However, we have supplied copies to the respective towns and asked that they
inform NCDOT of any corrections as well as sending us copies for our files.
RECOMMENDATION: The Administration recommends approval of the proposed road name corrections
in County planning jurisdiction and forwarding to the DCHC MPO for transmittal
to NCDOT.
