RES-2013-048 J4 b <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> RESOLUTION CALLING ON CONGRESS TO FUND URGENTLY <br /> NEEDED SERVICES AND INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIR IN ORANGE <br /> COUNTY AND THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES BY BRINGING <br /> WAR DOLLARS HOME <br /> WHEREAS, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have cost the nation over one trillion dollars, <br /> N.C. taxpayers $34 billion and Orange County taxpayers $480 million; and <br /> WHEREAS, 1.6 million residents of North Carolina live in poverty, with a poverty rate of <br /> 16.9 percent in Orange County; and <br /> WHEREAS, spending for the wars has diverted money from education, job growth, <br /> access to medical care, low cost housing, infrastructure repair, environmental <br /> protection, and other needs in Orange County and throughout North Carolina; and <br /> WHEREAS, since the nation, North Carolina, and Orange County have suffered layoffs, <br /> cutbacks in services, and delays in repairing and building infrastructure, it is time to <br /> reexamine our spending priorities; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of <br /> Commissioners calls upon the United States Congress and President Barack Obama to <br /> bring our war dollars home and use the savings to meet vital human needs, promote <br /> education, rebuild our infrastructure, protect our environment, support job-creating <br /> businesses, and aid our municipal, county and state governments. <br /> This the 18th day of June 2013. <br /> Barry Jacob <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
