Orange County NC Website
11
1 Carla Banks said that Kissimmee had similar issues and those were addressed in a re-
2 design effort, so that has been a good example. She referenced the language translation issue
3 and said that the solution would involve not only Spanish, but other languages. She said there
4 had been work with the attorney's office to create a disclaimer for the translation. She said this
5 is the poor man's version of translation, as it addresses the need without employing
6 professional translators.
7 Commissioner Pelissier said this is a great feature and it addresses all of the languages.
8 Chair Jacobs said that the Diamond Bar site incorporated humor and he liked that.
9 Frank Clifton said a lot of sites have audio content, which takes additional capacity but
10 can be important for visually impaired residents and this is a long term goal for the county.
11 Chair Jacobs said it should be optional and Frank Clifton said yes.
12 Commissioner Price liked the "Upcoming Events" tab on the Diamond Bar website.
13 Chair Jacobs asked Carla Banks to send the Board links to award winning websites
14 from counties comparable in size to Orange County.
15 Frank Clifton said David Hunt is an asset for his internal photography that is used on the
16 website.
17 Commissioner Rich asked about the timeframe.
18 Carla Banks said the goal is to launch in January 2014.
19 Commissioner Rich asked about social media.
20 Carla Banks said the county's twitter and facebook designs would be started next
21 month. She said these will be integrated into the website design so that website updates will be
22 automatically fed into social media.
23 Commissioner asked where and how the social media content will be generated.
24 Carla Banks said it would be a platform for press releases, flyers and written materials.
25 She said the website will be modeled for mobile devices.
26 Jim Northup said there is a cost component to this, so the board is preparing for July 1st
27 and is starting to work with vendors. He said that these numbers will be brought forward for
28 approval. He said the total conversion will take about 6 months.
29 Chair Jacobs asked when the board will be apprised of the process.
30 Frank Clifton said that incremental evaluations will come forward for approval, as well as
31 a general preview of the website before it rolls out.
32 Commissioner Rich said she just wanted to know if the tweets are coming from staff.
33 Commissioner Gordon asked what the board will be approving incrementally.
34 Frank Clifton said certain elements of the website will be brought forward as it
35 progresses, leading to the ultimate preview of the website before breakout.
36 Jim Northup said this update is to let the Board know the status of where things are now
37 as well as where this is going.
38 Commissioner Gordon said she is interested in how it looks and feels and how it works.
39 She is interested in the general look and how user friendly it is.
40 Jim Northup said these issues are being addressed as things proceed, and this is just
41 the first step in the process. He said the user friendly piece is being addressed. He said that
42 the process is standardized template based, which will make it easier to change major
43 components without having to work code.
44 Carla Banks gave an example of creating a new section with content on the airport. She
45 said the content management system is much more user friendly for the staff in making
46 changes or adding content.
47 Jim Northup said the staff has been encouraged by this system.
48 Commissioner Gordon expressed concerns about the agenda process, where the entire
49 agenda has to be downloaded rather than being able to visit one item of interest. She said this
50 is a common thing people would want.
