All Residents Residents in Poverty
Medicare
Orange County
9.5%
8.0%
State
14.4%
18.3%
Medicaid
Orange County
4.9%
21.8%
State
10.8%
52.5%
Uninsured
Orange County
12.7%
34.7%
128.3%
State
1 12.8%
Of the estimated 13,462 people in Orange County without health insurance, 1,866 of those are
aged 17 and under and 11,596 are between the ages of 18 and 64. All residents aged 65 and over
are covered by Medicare.
The Orange County Health Assessment includes the following information about reproductive
health issues:
• There are more than 1,800 pregnancies and 1,100 live births in Orange County in a given
year.
• The rate of teen pregnancies in Orange County is nearly 4 times greater among Nonwhites
than Whites; the overall rate of teen pregnancies for both groups is lower than for the whole
state.
• A clear gap exists in the level of care received by Nonwhite and White women.
• Orange County Nonwhites giving birth are more likely than Whites to be under age 18,
without a high school degree, unmarried, on their fourth or more birth, smokers, and having
faced the death of a previous live born child.
The Orange County Health Assessment team reports that community residents believe economic
status is a chief factor in explaining why some people in Orange County enjoy better health than
others. "People believe that low income contributes to ill health for a number of reasons: the poor
cannot afford medical care; they have no insurance; they don't have access to health education
programs or health promoting activities; they have to work 2 or 3 jobs to survive and have little
time for their families; their poor finances cause them more anxiety or depression; stress can lead
to substance abuse, further compounding health problems."
9. Substance Abuse Services and Issues
Drug and alcohol treatment and rehabilitation was the third most common cause for
hospitalization among Orange County residents during 1989 -1994 with a total of 1,983 persons
being admitted during this six year period.
10
11
