• <br /> 6 <br /> 1 Nancy Coston referred to the graphic slide of programs and services. She said <br /> 2 that there are a large number of programs under DSS and she would like to have the <br /> 3 managers highlight a few of them. <br /> 4 <br /> 5 Sharron Hinton reviewed the following: <br /> 6 Adolescent Parenting Program <br /> 7 • Antonia gave birth to her daughter when she was 15 years old and in the 10m <br /> 8 grade at Orange High School <br /> 9 • The Adolescent Parenting Program gave her emotional and academic support, <br /> 10 parenting education, and access to resources <br /> 11 • Despite challenges she successfully graduated from high school and attends <br /> 12 Alamance Community College <br /> 13 <br /> 14 Sharon Hinton said that the goal of the Adolescent Parenting Program is to work <br /> 15 with all of the pregnant and parenting teens. She said there are social workers <br /> 16 based in each of the local school systems- Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange <br /> 17 County. She said that the goal of the program is to offer support to help students <br /> 18 graduate and to help prevent a second pregnancy. She reviewed the individual <br /> 19 success story highlighted on the slide. <br /> 20 <br /> 21 Denise Schaffer reviewed the following: <br /> 22 Consolidated Child Care Subsidy Program <br /> 23 • Maximizes use of state and federal funds <br /> 24 • Reduces administrative costs so more funds can be used for subsidy(815 <br /> 25 children per month) <br /> 26 • Provides a seamless transition between funding sources <br /> 27 • Maintains one waiting list that clearly defines the number of Orange County <br /> 28 families waiting for subsidy /356 kids) <br /> 29 • Supports access to other agency programs for families and children <br /> 30 • Continues to assure the m jority of children are enrolled in high quality child care <br /> 31 programs (90%) <br /> 32 <br /> 33 Tina Clark reviewed the following success story: <br /> 34 Consolidated Child Care Subsidy Program <br /> 35 • "Debbie" was a single mom struggling to find work and battling substance <br /> 36 abuse while trying to raise her 3 year-old. <br /> 37 • She began participating in the Work First program and receiving child care <br /> 38 subsidy. She was also referred to the Horizons program. <br /> 39 • Debbie successfully completed both programs within one year and remains <br /> 40 drug free. She has maintained employment and now has her own apartment <br /> 41 <br /> 42 Sharon Hinton reviewed the following: <br /> 43 Youth Enhancement Fund <br /> 44 • The Youth Enhancement Fund was established by the Commissioners in <br /> 45 2011 to provide low-income youth with opportunities to participate in <br /> 46 recreational activities <br /> 47 (Graphic) <br /> 48 Sharron Hinton said The Youth Enhancement Fund was established by the <br /> 49 Commissioners in 2011 to provide low-income youth with opportunities to participate in <br /> 50 recreational activities.
